Reception Key Information
Our Curriculum:
In Reception, we follow the the Statutory Framework (EYFS),
This sets out all of the standards an Early Years Provider must follow.
The Early Years Curriculum is split into three Prime areas -
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
The Prime areas are the fundamentals of a child’s early education, they are particularly important for building a foundation for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, forming relationships and thriving.
We also support and teach children the specific areas of the EYFS, these are –
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding The World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Phonics and Guided Reading:
Alongside the Early Years Statutory Framework, we teach daily phonics as a discrete lesson to all children in Reception. We follow the Little Wandle- Letters and Sounds programme and we teach phonics as a four-part sequence – Revisit/Review, Teach, Practise and Apply. Children also take part in a daily Guided Reading session where the reading book is matched to the phonic phase they are on and in addition to this, they work with an adult to complete focused reading activities.
Visit the website below to find information and resources which will help to support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters at home. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.

Reception Baseline Information
In the first six weeks of starting Reception, children will complete a variety of baseline assessments with their teachers. We use these assessments to collect key information about each child's development and attainment so that we can support their learning further. In addition to this, we also use information provided by parents, observations, pre-school settings, private nurseries and childminders and other professionals.
From September 2021, it is statutory for Reception children to take part in the Government Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). This is a short, interactive and practical assessment of children's early Literacy, Maths, Communication and Language skills.
Please read the booklet below to find out more information about the Government Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA).
