Physical Education

Intent

PE

At Shadsworth Infant School we are passionate about raising standards in Physical Education and we ensure that it is taught with an engaging, enthusiastic approach. Through Physical Education we aim to enable pupils to develop co-ordination, strength, stamina and develop skills with an increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. We seek for pupils to develop their skills of selecting and applying skills and tactics. Following the Lancashire scheme of work, children will improve their fundamental skills in a fun, safe and enthused way. Children will then progress to be part of activities that promote stability & balance, object control, travel, games & tactics and swimming.

Implementation

Physical education is taught for 2 hours on a weekly basis. Class teachers are responsible for teaching the Lancashire County Council scheme of work once a week where adaptive, well-planned lessons are taught with challenge and progression shown. A qualified Sports Coach delivers the second lesson which is based on the improvement of fundamental skills and how children can be skilful and tactical in team games. Physical development is promoted in EYFS on a daily basis during continuous by offering large gross motor resources i.e. bicycles, scooters, balls, skipping ropes, stilts etc, as well as our provision having climbing equipment. KS1 children run the ‘Mile a Day’ which is carried out for 15 minutes on a daily basis. Year 2 children also take part in an hours swimming lesson on a weekly basis for one term of the year.

Impact

Physical Education at Shadsworth Infant School is assessed using the following;

  •  informal judgements by staff during lessons
  • immediate next steps provided via verbal feedback
  • pupil and peer assessments
  • formal skills and assessment checklists

Come the end of each Physical Education unit teachers make a summary judgement about the work each pupil has completed in relation to the success criteria. The Physical Education subject leader monitors class assessment and analyses data on a termly basis.
